Can You Move a Motorized Pergola After Installation?

Motorized pergola relocation guide
A FlexPatio pergola can be relocated, but “movable” should not be read as permission to lift and carry an anchored, accessorized structure intact. The current FlexPatio FAQ says the pergola can be moved or disassembled. For the exact 10-by-13 POWER+ Gen 2 manual reviewed here, the documented path is controlled disassembly: use at least four people, keep the louvers open and bound, and follow the installation sequence in reverse. Before reassembly, resolve the power and accessory plan, inspect every part, prepare a verified new foundation and recheck local permit or HOA requirements.
Treat relocation as a new project
The current FlexPatio FAQ says the pergola can be moved after assembly and can be disassembled for relocation or a move to a new home. That establishes a general possibility, not a universal moving method. It does not say every installed configuration can be transported in one piece, that anchors are reusable or that accessories can remain attached.
Page 30 of the current 10-by-13 gray POWER+ Gen 2 freestanding installation manual gives the more useful boundary. Its dismounting section requires at least four people, says to keep the louvers open and bind them together to prevent unintended unfolding, and directs the crew to follow the mounting instructions in reverse. It also says the safety instructions apply during dismounting and that wall holes should be professionally sealed.
Those instructions apply to the named manual. A different size, post system, generation, wall-mounted layout or connected multi-unit configuration may use different parts, connections and handling steps. Download the current manual for the actual pergola before assigning a crew or transport method.
Do not plan an intact lift from the generic FAQ alone. Anchors, posts, louvers, motors, lighting, power outlets, shades, doors and connected modules introduce weight and fragile connections. The reviewed exact manual documents dismounting in reverse order; it does not publish an approved whole-structure lifting procedure.
Build the move around six controlled phases
| Phase | Primary question | Evidence or decision to secure |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Document | What exactly is installed? | Model, generation, size, layout, post option, serial or order record, accessories, manuals and photos |
| 2. Isolate | How will power and accessory energy be made safe? | A model-specific plan from qualified electrical and installation personnel before parts are exposed |
| 3. Dismount | What sequence and crew does the exact manual require? | Current manual, trained crew, labeled parts, protected work zone and the required tools |
| 4. Pack and transport | How will long parts, finishes, motors and hardware be protected? | Inventory, labels, protective packaging and a transport plan sized for the actual components |
| 5. Prepare the new site | Is the new location suitable? | Dimensions, level support, foundation, anchoring, drainage, power, setbacks and approvals |
| 6. Reassemble and commission | Does every system work safely in the new location? | Inspection, exact-manual assembly, electrical reconnection, alignment, control and drainage checks |
Document the installed configuration before removing anything
Save the current product page, dimension drawing, manual and accessory documents for the exact installation. Photograph every post, beam, louver zone, motor, controller, cable route, drain outlet, anchor plate and accessory connection. Number parts and hardware in a way that maps back to the manual rather than relying on memory.
Connected pergolas and wall-mounted layouts need special review. They may have shared alignments, multiple power feeds, flashing, wall penetrations or site-built details that are not described by the single freestanding manual used as evidence here. A custom or modified installation should be returned to the responsible designer or installer before dismantling.
Inspect the structure for damage, corrosion, bent parts, loose fasteners, water intrusion or cable problems. Relocation is not a reason to conceal a defect. Record it and ask FlexPatio or a qualified installer whether the affected part should be repaired or replaced before reassembly.
Make the electrical and accessory plan explicit
A motorized pergola can include motors, lighting, control equipment, outlets and powered side accessories. Do not assume that pressing “off” on a remote makes exposed electrical work safe. Determine every energy source and have the applicable disconnect, verification and reconnection procedure defined before disassembly.
For covered workplace activity, the current OSHA electrical work-practice standard generally requires exposed live parts to be de-energized before work unless a limited exception applies, and it requires safe procedures to be determined before de-energizing equipment. A residential move still needs the requirements that apply at the site and qualified electrical judgment. This article does not replace an electrician or create a universal lockout procedure.
Remove or secure accessories in the order required by their own documents. Screens, shades, glass doors, slat walls, heaters, fans, outlets and projection equipment can change handling and packing needs. Do not infer an accessory-removal sequence from the pergola-frame manual when the accessory has a separate manual.
The new site must qualify again
The current FlexPatio POWER+ information page says pergolas should be installed on a flat, level and structurally sound surface and securely anchored to a stable base. The new location therefore needs its own layout, foundation, anchoring, drainage and power review. The old site approval does not prove that the new slab, deck, pavers, soil or post positions are suitable.
Local requirements can also change when a pergola moves across a yard, to another property or into a different jurisdiction. The International Code Council explains that model-code language becomes law only when adopted by the relevant state or local authority. Ask the authority having jurisdiction whether the relocated structure needs a permit, revised drawings, inspection or structural documentation. Check HOA approval separately.
Before reassembly, compare the new site with the exact post layout and diagonal dimensions in the current manual. Confirm clearances around doors, windows, roofs, property lines and utilities. Plan where post drainage will discharge and where power will enter. If the model, layout or accessory set is changing, obtain revised documents instead of treating the move as a like-for-like reinstall.
Pergola relocation checklist
- Identify the exact model, generation, size, layout, post system and every accessory.
- Download the current installation, accessory and electrical documents for that configuration.
- Photograph and label structural, drainage, control, cable and accessory connections.
- Have qualified personnel define how all energy sources will be isolated and verified.
- Use the crew size, louver position, binding and reverse-order steps in the exact manual.
- Inventory, protect and label every part and fastener for transport.
- Inspect damage or wear before deciding which parts can be reinstalled.
- Verify the new foundation, post elevations, anchoring, drainage route and power supply.
- Recheck local permit, structural, electrical and HOA requirements for the new location.
- Commission louvers, lights, controls, outlets, accessories and drainage after reassembly.
Frequently asked questions
Can a FlexPatio pergola be moved after installation?
FlexPatio's current FAQ says the pergola can be moved or disassembled. For the exact 10-by-13 Gen 2 POWER+ manual reviewed here, relocation should be planned as controlled disassembly and reassembly, not as permission to carry the anchored structure intact.
How many people are needed to disassemble it?
The reviewed 10-by-13 Gen 2 POWER+ manual says at least four people are needed for dismounting. Other models or site conditions may require a different crew, equipment or professional installer, so use the exact current manual.
What should happen to the louvers before disassembly?
The reviewed manual says to keep the louvers open and bind them together before dismounting to avoid unintended unfolding, damage and injury. Follow the exact manual rather than applying this instruction to another model by assumption.
Can the same anchors be reused at the new site?
Do not assume so. The new foundation, substrate, edge distances, post layout, anchor specification and local requirements must be checked for the exact model. Obtain a new anchoring plan from the responsible installer or engineer.
Do I need a new permit or HOA approval after moving it?
Possibly. A new address or location can change setbacks, foundation, structural, drainage, electrical and private-community requirements. Check the local authority and HOA before preparing the new site or reassembling the pergola.
