Can You Install a Motorized Pergola on a Sloped Patio?

Pergola foundation and site-planning guide
A sloped patio is not automatically ready for a motorized pergola. The current 10-by-13 FlexPatio POWER+ Gen 2 manual says to start with rectangular, solid and level footings, a concrete pad or a deck. It also gives a limited orientation note for a site that cannot be fully leveled, but it does not publish a general slope tolerance or a universal correction detail. Treat the slope as a pre-installation design question: verify elevations at every post, the exact foundation and anchoring plan, drainage, side-wall requirements and local approvals before assembly.
Separate the support surface from roof drainage
A patio can shed water by sloping away from a house, while a pergola still needs its post supports prepared to the requirements of the exact model. Those are different systems. The patio slope controls site runoff. The pergola roof and internal channels control water that lands on the closed louvers. A designed roof drainage path does not establish that the structure can be installed with posts at arbitrary elevations.
Page 9 of the current 10-by-13 gray POWER+ Gen 2 freestanding installation manual says it is critically important to begin with rectangular, solid and level footings, a concrete pad or a deck. The same page then states that the foundation or ground must be level and adds that, if leveling is not possible, the side with the C1 crossbeam should be placed on higher ground.
That second sentence is an orientation instruction, not a published permission for every sloped site. The manual does not state a maximum percentage, elevation difference, shim thickness or universal footing detail for an uneven patio. If the four proposed post locations are not level, obtain written guidance for the exact model and site instead of converting the C1 note into a guessed tolerance.
Important documentation gap: the reviewed manual says the foundation must be level and also gives a C1-high-side instruction when leveling is not possible. Because it does not quantify the exception, the article cannot approve a specific slope. Record the elevations and ask FlexPatio, the installer or the project engineer to resolve the exact condition in writing.
Use the exact configuration, not a generic pergola rule
The current FlexPatio POWER+ information page says its pergolas can be installed on most flat, level and structurally sound surfaces, including concrete slabs, pavers, stone or tile patios and wood or composite decking. It also says the pergola must be securely anchored to a stable base and recommends a concrete slab or properly supported concrete footings beneath each post for long-term stability.
Those surface names do not make every slab, deck or paver field suitable. A deck still needs adequate structure at the post locations. Pavers or tile may need supported footings below them. Existing concrete can have cracks, joints, edge-distance constraints or unknown thickness. The site professional should evaluate the actual support and the exact anchoring system rather than approving the project from the surface label alone.
Accessories can make levelness more important. The current POWER+ Gen 2 product page states that side walls require a level installation surface. That is a configuration boundary, not a promise that every shade, shutter, glass door or screen will fit after a sloped installation. Confirm the specific side type, opening, track, handle and side length before ordering.
| Site condition | What current evidence says | Decision before installation |
|---|---|---|
| Four post locations are level and structurally adequate | The reviewed manual calls for rectangular, solid and level supports | Verify dimensions, diagonals, anchoring, drainage and the exact model documents |
| Patio slopes, but prepared post supports can be made level | The general FlexPatio page requires a flat, level and stable base | Have the correction and anchoring detail designed for the actual slab, deck, pavers or footings |
| Post locations remain at different elevations | The manual gives only a C1-high-side note and no general slope tolerance | Stop and obtain written model- and site-specific approval; do not guess a shim or post modification |
| Side walls are planned | The POWER+ Gen 2 page says side walls require a level installation surface | Confirm the exact side-wall type and opening geometry after the site plan is resolved |
| Foundation or anchoring is changing | Local code and approval depend on the jurisdiction and project | Check the local authority, HOA, installer and engineer as applicable before work begins |
Measure the four support points before choosing a correction
Begin with the actual post layout from the exact technical drawing. Mark the proposed post centers, then have the elevations and diagonals checked. A visual impression that the patio is “almost flat” is not a measurement. Record the high point, low point and elevation difference between each support location, along with slab joints, deck framing, paver construction and edges that may affect anchors.
Map water separately. Note which way the patio drains, where the pergola posts would discharge roof water, whether runoff can reach the house or neighboring property and whether a proposed footing would interrupt an existing path. Do not make the pergola frame compensate for a drainage problem without a documented design.
Then choose the correction with the responsible professional. The answer may involve new level footings, a rebuilt pad, a verified deck detail or a different pergola position. The reviewed public documents do not authorize improvised stacks, field-cut posts or a universal shim package, so this article does not recommend one.
Keep local approval separate from manufacturer guidance
Manufacturer documents explain the product. They do not decide what a specific city, county or HOA will accept. The International Code Council explains that model-code language becomes law when the appropriate state or local authority adopts it. Local amendments and project conditions can therefore change the required permit, foundation, structural, drainage or electrical review.
Ask the authority having jurisdiction what drawings and calculations are needed for the address. Treat HOA review as a separate private approval. If the slope, soil, deck, retaining condition or anchor layout affects structural performance, use a qualified engineer or contractor familiar with the adopted local requirements and the exact pergola configuration.
Sloped-patio site checklist
- Save the exact model, generation, size, layout, color and accessory list.
- Download the current installation manual and technical drawing for that configuration.
- Mark every proposed post center and measure the elevation at each location.
- Check the rectangle and diagonals using the tolerances in the exact drawing or manual.
- Document the slab, deck, paver, tile or footing construction beneath each post.
- Map patio runoff and the planned pergola-post drainage discharge.
- Confirm side-wall levelness and opening requirements for every selected side accessory.
- Obtain a written foundation and anchoring detail for any uneven support condition.
- Check local permit, structural, electrical, drainage and HOA requirements as applicable.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a motorized pergola on a sloped patio?
Do not assume a sloped patio is acceptable. The exact FlexPatio manual reviewed here calls for rectangular, solid and level footings, a concrete pad or a deck, then gives only a limited orientation note for a site that cannot be fully leveled. Have the exact site and model reviewed before installation.
Is patio slope the same as pergola roof drainage slope?
No. Patio or footing slope describes the support under the posts. Roof drainage is a designed path inside the pergola. A roof drainage feature does not prove that uneven post elevations are acceptable.
How much patio slope can a FlexPatio pergola tolerate?
The reviewed 10-by-13 Gen 2 POWER+ manual does not publish a general allowable slope percentage or a universal shim detail. Ask FlexPatio and the installer for written guidance tied to the exact model, post locations and foundation plan.
Do FlexPatio side walls require a level surface?
The current POWER+ Gen 2 product page says side walls require a level installation surface. Confirm this requirement for the exact side-wall type, side length and pergola configuration before ordering.
Will leveling the patio remove permit or engineering requirements?
Not necessarily. Foundation, anchoring, drainage, setbacks, electrical work and structural review can still depend on the address, model and project. Check the local authority, HOA and qualified project professionals as applicable.
