Fixed or Motorized Louvers for a Custom Pergola: Which Roof Zones Should You Choose?

Custom pergola roof planning guide

Choose motorized louvers where you want to change sunlight, shade or airflow during the day. Choose fixed louvers only where a permanent roof condition supports a defined use, such as a dedicated center zone for downlights or an approved ceiling-fan support. The current FlexPatio EASE+ configurator offers both roof types and a center fixed-louver upgrade, but the selector is not the final engineering record. Map each activity zone first, then confirm louver direction, drainage, wiring, controls, supports and exact roof boundaries on the approved drawings before production.

Short answer

There is no universal best roof type. Motorized louvers add daily control; fixed louvers remove that adjustment. A mixed roof can make sense when one part of the patio needs flexible daylight and another needs a permanent equipment zone. The final plan must show exactly where each roof type begins and ends.

Start with the activity below each roof zone

The current FlexPatio EASE+ Custom Motorized Pergola Kit page presents motorized adjustable louvers and fixed-angle louvers as roof choices. Its configurator also shows a center fixed-louver upgrade. Those options are useful only after the patio plan identifies what happens below each area.

Mark dining, lounging, cooking, doors, windows, screens and the main walking routes. Note when direct sun is welcome and when it creates glare or heat. A motorized zone is most useful where the preferred roof position changes with time, season or activity. A fixed zone is easier to justify when the desired condition is stable and the approved design needs a permanent location for lighting or fan support.

Do not choose a roof type from the top view alone. A closed roof may change daylight at adjacent windows, while an open motorized zone can change the view and the path of sun below. Test the plan from seated eye level, from inside nearby rooms and at the doors people use every day.

Use motorized louvers for a changing condition

The EASE+ page describes its motorized louvers as adjustable from 0 to 120 degrees. That supports a clear planning benefit: the roof position can respond to sun and ventilation needs. It does not establish the best angle for a particular home, a universal rain setting or an automatic weather response for every configuration.

Decide how the louvers should open relative to the sun, the house and the main view. FlexPatio says the louver opening direction can be customized before production, so show that direction on the final drawing. A direction that brings useful morning light to a dining area may produce unwanted afternoon glare at a screen or window. Test the proposed orientation with the real site rather than copying a showroom image.

A motorized section also creates a controls and power scope. Identify the motorized roof zones, their power feeds, the control method and the physical fallback. If lights, shades or other accessories share a control system, document their names and commands so commissioning can verify each device separately.

Use fixed louvers for a defined permanent purpose

Fixed louvers can provide a stable roof condition, but they give up day-to-day adjustment. That tradeoff should be tied to a specific purpose, not treated as a cheaper or simpler default without a complete proposal. Ask what angle is supplied, how the section drains and how it connects to adjacent motorized or fixed areas.

The EASE+ page describes a center fixed-louver upgrade with concealed wiring, integrated downlights and optional ceiling-fan support. That is a product-specific designed zone. It does not mean any fixed louver or any existing pergola can support a fan. If the project needs that feature, the final drawings should identify the fixed center section, support, wiring, fan or light model, finished height and maintenance access.

Important boundary: the public EASE+ page contains different size descriptions in its configurator, feature copy and FAQ. This roof-choice guide does not use those numbers. Obtain the final outside dimensions, clear dimensions and roof-zone sizes from the approved project drawings.

Review drainage at every roof transition

The product page says EASE+ uses engineered louvers, hidden gutters and drainage channels. That describes the system concept, not the water path for a particular mixed roof. Ask the drawing to show how water leaves each fixed and motorized area, where it enters gutters or channels and where it discharges at the site.

Pay extra attention where roof types or modules meet. A joint, center fixed section or connected layout can create a different collection point from a single rectangular roof. Do not block a planned outlet with a wall, screen, post accessory, planting bed or walkway. The site still needs a suitable destination for discharged water.

Freeze the roof schedule before production

FlexPatio's published EASE+ process moves from an initial concept to final design and production-ready CAD drawings, then begins production after drawing approval. Use that approval point to close the gap between a visual configurator and a buildable roof schedule.

For every area, list the roof type, louver direction, supports, lights, fan, motor, wiring, control and drainage path. Mark any side walls and doors that could affect airflow or equipment clearance. If two drawings or schedules disagree, stop the approval until one current revision controls.

A rendering shows the idea. The approved roof schedule controls the decision. Save the final drawing, equipment list and revision identifier together so the delivered configuration can be checked against the same record.

Custom roof approval checklist

  • Map dining, lounge, cooking, door, window and circulation zones.
  • Record which zones need changing daylight or airflow.
  • Assign fixed louvers only to a defined permanent use.
  • Show the opening direction for every motorized louver area.
  • Identify center fixed sections, supports, downlights and fan locations.
  • Confirm motors, wiring, controls and a tested physical fallback.
  • Trace water through every roof area, transition, gutter and outlet.
  • Keep drainage points clear of walls, accessories and walking routes.
  • Check outside and clear dimensions on the final project drawings.
  • Approve one coordinated revision before production begins.

Frequently asked questions

Are motorized louvers always better than fixed louvers?

No. Motorized louvers are useful when light, shade or airflow needs to change. Fixed louvers can suit a permanent equipment or shade zone. The right choice depends on the use below each area and the approved roof, drainage and control plan.

Can one custom pergola use both roof types?

The current EASE+ configurator offers motorized or fixed roof choices and a center fixed-louver upgrade. Confirm the exact mixed layout, transitions, supports and drainage on the final project drawings rather than assuming every combination is available.

Can fixed louvers later be changed to motorized louvers?

Do not assume so. The frame, louvers, motors, wiring, controls and drainage may be designed as one system. Ask FlexPatio whether the exact approved configuration has a documented conversion path before treating future motorization as an option.

Does a fixed center section automatically support a ceiling fan?

No. The EASE+ page describes a specific center fixed-louver upgrade designed for lighting and optional fan support. The final design still needs the approved support, fan model, wiring, finished height and clearances.

Which document should control the final roof choice?

Use the current approved production drawing and coordinated equipment schedule for the exact project. A configurator view, rendering or earlier concept can help communicate intent but should not override the final revision.
