Aluminum vs Steel Pergolas: A Material Buying Guide

Aluminum and steel pergola material comparison in premium outdoor settings

An aluminum pergola is a type of metal pergola. If you are comparing it with a steel design, start with the frame material and its protective finish, then compare the complete structure and the care it needs.

Quick answer: Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer. Steel can be protected with systems such as hot-dip galvanizing, which adds a zinc-based coating. Both deserve a closer look at finish quality, maintenance instructions and the exact design. The word “metal” alone tells you too little to choose.

Separate the frame from its finish

Aluminum

Aluminum reacts with oxygen to form a thin protective oxide layer. A pergola may also have a specified surface finish. When comparing products, ask what treatment is applied and how the manufacturer wants it cleaned and repaired.

A color name describes appearance. It does not tell you the coating system, its care requirements or whether the product is suitable for your exposure.

Steel

“Steel” also needs detail. For example, hot-dip galvanizing immerses fabricated steel in molten zinc to form a protective coating. Other zinc-coating processes differ, so ask which process the supplier means by “galvanized.”

Do not treat every steel frame as bare steel. Compare the actual protection system supplied, including the treatment of connections and any areas altered during installation.

Material questions for an aluminum or steel pergola
Compare Aluminum option Steel option
Material identity Request the frame’s alloy specification and the materials used for the roof and connections. Request the steel specification and identify the roof, fasteners and connection materials separately.
Surface protection Identify the applied finish in addition to the metal’s natural oxide layer. Ask for approved cleaning and damage-repair guidance. Identify the coating process, any additional finish, and the instructions for treating damaged or modified areas.
Ongoing care Read the finish-care instructions and, for a motorized roof, the separate mechanism and electrical maintenance guidance. Read the coating inspection and maintenance instructions. Galvanized steel still benefits from periodic checks.
Structural suitability Compare documentation for the exact span, size, layout, connections and installation conditions. Ask a qualified local professional to assess the proposed design for your site.
Everyday use Compare roof movement, shade, drainage and optional features separately. A frame-material label does not specify these functions.

Choose the upkeep you can commit to

Ask for the care instructions before ordering. They turn “low maintenance” into something you can plan: what needs checking, which products may be used, who can repair the finish, and how to obtain replacement parts.

If finish care is your priority

Compare the cleaning method and repair process for each shortlisted finish. Ask whether a sample is available to assess color and texture. A sample can help with appearance; it cannot establish outdoor service life or whole-frame strength.

If you want a moving roof

Add the roof mechanism, controls and drainage to your ownership plan. FlexPatio’s current FAQ calls for regular gutter cleaning to keep water draining. Use the exact model’s manual for other cleaning, operating and electrical precautions, and use qualified service where required.

For steel with a hot-dip galvanized coating, the American Galvanizers Association also recommends periodic inspection and maintenance. Neither material category justifies assuming that the complete pergola will need no attention.

Turn your preferences into a shortlist

  1. Name the material and finish. Replace a vague “metal frame” description with the actual specification. Keep unanswered items visible while comparing options.
  2. Describe your exposure. Tell each supplier about coastal air, nearby pool use or other relevant conditions. Request written guidance for the proposed finish, hardware and care plan in that setting.
  3. Match the complete design. Hold your desired coverage and roof function constant when comparing products. A fixed open frame and a motorized louvered system offer different daily experiences.
  4. Compare ownership scope. Include installation and the maintenance tasks described by each supplier. Avoid assigning a lifetime cost advantage without comparable quotes and supported service assumptions.

Where FlexPatio fits

The current POWER+ Gen 2 product description identifies an aluminum structure with motorized aluminum louvers. That makes it an aluminum option to investigate. Confirm the finish, exact configuration and current care documents before making your final choice.

Questions about metal pergolas

Is aluminum different from metal?

Aluminum is a metal. When a listing says “metal pergola,” identify the actual material before comparing it with an aluminum pergola. A steel frame and an aluminum frame are two possible metal options.

Does aluminum automatically mean a motorized roof?

No. Frame material and roof operation describe different parts of the product. Check whether the specific roof is fixed, manually operated or motorized, and what controls are included.
